Why is USAA partnering with the 'It Can Wait' (ICW) Campaign?
• No text is worth dying for. That's why USAA has joined forces with AT&T in support of the "It Can Wait" movement – to help put an end to texting and driving. We hope you'll join us in taking the pledge not to text and drive – and being an advocate for safe driving among your family and friends.
What is the purpose of the ICW campaign?
• The ICW movement focuses on educating the public on the dangers of texting while driving. Those who send text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a crash. Our goal is simple - educate members, employees, and the general public on the dangers in texting while driving and promote taking the pledge to never text and drive.
How is the ICW campaign different from other texting and driving campaigns?
• ICW is mounting a large campaign calling on the public, law enforcement, educators, national retailers, consumer safety groups, and legislators to join the movement and raise awareness of the dangers of texting while driving. We are active on social media encouraging all Americans to take our pledge to never text and drive again.
What is the purpose of the simulator?
• We wanted to show firsthand the dangers of texting behind the wheel in a safe way. All you need is a computer and a Smartphone to use it. As you drive, you'll receive texts that you have to reply to correctly. You may be surprised by what can happen when your attention is divided between the road and the phone.
What impact has this campaign had in regards to lowering the number of people who text and drive? How do you measure the success of the campaign?
• We want people to pledge not to text and drive, and each pledge is a measure of success. AT&T have more than 1.3M pledges to date and counting. We also want to change attitudes and behaviors – and ultimately save lives. Awareness of the It Can Wait message increased 26 percent during the period of the first-ever "National No Text on Board Day" in September 2012. One-in-three people in that period said that texting while driving messages have an impact on their driving habits (AT&T Texting while driving- ICW Perceptions Study). Our goal is to make texting and driving as unacceptable as drinking and driving.
Can you beat the simulator or is it set to make participant's wreck or be pulled over?
• The only way to "win", which means reach the end of the track, is if you never send a text message. If you send a text message at all and make it past all of the obstacles, you will be pulled over before reaching the end. The timing of the obstacles gets much harder the minute you send your first text.
Why does this campaign only focus on Texting while Driving? What about talking on the phone and other distractions when driving?
• We encourage everyone to focus on the road and not any other distractions to maintain driver safety. However, every campaign needs focus to be successful. Our focus is texting and driving because it is a serious road-safety problem. Texting drivers are 23 times more likely to be in an accident (Virginia Tech Transportation Institute Research: www.vtti.vt.edu).
